DOG TITLES

C. D. - Champion Dog:

This title is issued by the A.K.C. after a dog has been certified by three different judges to have received scores of more than 50 percent of the available points for each exercise and a final score of 170 or more points, provided that no fewer than six dogs competed in each of the three licensed obedience trials entered.

Novice Classes are divided into two divisions: A and B which a dog can not be entered in both at the same show. Minimum age of dog is six months, and the handler must one of the owners or a member of the family for Novice A, whereas in Novice B the handler can be anyone. The exercises are: Heel on leash, Stand for examination, Heel free, Recall, Long sit, Long Down.

The Open A Class is for dogs who have earned their C.D. title. They must be handled by one of the owners or a family member. Open B Class is designed for dogs that have earned their C.D. or Champion Dog Excellent (C.D.X.) title and may be handled in competition by the owner or anyone else. No animal may be entered in both Open A and Open B classes at the same trial. The Open exercises are: Heel free, Drop on recall, Retrieve on flat, Retrieve over high jump, Broad jump, Long sit, and Long Down.

C. D. X. -

Champion Dog Excellent: This title is issued by the A.K.C. after a dog has been certified by three different judges and have received scores of more than 50 percent of the available points in each of the exercises and a final score of 170 or more points to qualify. No fewer than six dogs must have been entered in competition.

CH. - Champion: Dogs with either of these notaations in front of their names are American Champions in the conformation show ring. Dogs who have earned foreign Champion titles have that country's names preceding the title, example: Am., Can., Ch. Cobert's Reno of Lakeside who is an American and Canadian Champion.

G. V. - Grand Victor or Grand Victrix: The title given to the best male (Grand Victor) and best female (Grand Victrix) at the German Shepherd Dog Club of America's National Specialty Show each year. Only one male and one female may receive this honor in any given year.

OFA - Orthopedic Foundation for Animals: An individual dogl's hip or hip and elbow x-rays are submitted to the OFA by the dog owner's veterinarian for examination by a team of three independent veterinarians selected by the OFA. These vets determine the x-rays to be free enough of dysplasia that an OFA number is assigned to the dog. The number is shown as OFA GS 12345, the GS meaning German Shepherd, and a T following the number indicates the animal is identified by means of a tatoo. A dog must be at least two years of age to obtain an OFA number and must have some permanent method of identification; either tattoo or microchip.

R.O.M. -

Register of Merit: This title is awarded by the German Shepherd Dog Club of America to animals of both sex who have produced a minimum number of conformation Champions and other winning offsprings in either conformation and/or working competition. It is a recognition of the animal's ability to produce winning offspring and has nothing to do with the animal's own ability to win in the show ring. Both males and females can obtain this title whether or not they, themselves, are champions. All R.O.M. point data is collected from the official show results published in the American Kennel Club Gazette. In Germany a similar system of tabulating is done and published each year after the Seiger Show in the SV magazine. The records are of the prominent sires, successful or not.

Sel. - Select:

This is a rating given to the top dogs of either sex at the German Shepherd Dog Club of America's National Specialty Show each year. The selects are given in numerical order behind the Grand Victor and Grand Victrix beginning with Select 2, Select 3, etc. (the Grand Victor and Grand Victrix being the first Select male and female). Generally there are ten Select animals of either sex although this number may vary at the discretion of the judge choosing them. The Select rating is a highly coveted and respected title.

Where "3 times Select" is indicated on a pedigree, this means that the animal was awarded this prestigious rating at three different annual shows. Multiple Selects are difficult to achieve and attest to the longevity of these animals as well as their ability to be recognized as superior animals by more than one judge.

T. D. - Tracking Dog:

For the Tracking Test the dog must be at least six months of age and must be judged by two judges. The title is awarded by the A.K.C. when the two judges have passed a dog in tests in which at least three dogs have participated (in each test). If you have a dog that has a U.D. and acquires a T.D., you may use the letters U.D.T. after his name, signifying that he is a Utility Dog Tracker.

T. D. X. -

Tracking Dog Excellent:

U. D. - Utility Dog:

If the show-giving club so desires, the classes may be divided into A and B divisions. If divided, dogs may compete in the classes if they have won the C.D.X. title. If not divided, dogs that have won the C.D.X. and a previous U.D. title may compete. Anyone may handle the dog. The exercises are: Scent discrimination of Article 1, Scent discrimination of Article 2, Directed retrieve, Signal exercise, Directed jump, and Group examination. The dog must have been certified by three different judges to have received scores of more than 50 percent of the available points for each exercise and a final score of 170 or more points, provided that no fewer than three dogs competed in each of the three licensed obedience trials entered.
