Why the health clearances matter
Both Rus and Cristal have FCI-cleared hips and elbows. For a breed in which hip and elbow dysplasia are important inherited orthopedic concerns, breeding from evaluated parents is a fundamental part of responsible selection. It cannot guarantee that every puppy will have perfect joints—these are complex, multifactorial traits—but it gives the breeder objective information instead of breeding blindly.
The DM combination has also been deliberately managed. Cristal is DM Clear and Rus is a DM Carrier. With a Clear × Carrier mating, puppies may inherit either Clear or Carrier status, but none are expected to inherit two copies of the tested DM-associated variant and therefore none should be genetically At Risk from this particular mating.
Being a carrier is not the same as being affected; the critical breeding decision is knowing the genetic status of both parents and pairing them appropriately.
What we are looking for from this combination
Our goal with Rus × Cristal is a substantial, well-balanced German Shepherd with strong breed character, good pigmentation, sound structure, confidence and trainability.
Pedigree gives us probabilities, not guarantees, which is why Southernwind evaluates the actual parents and then follows the puppies closely as they develop.
For a new German Shepherd family, that is perhaps the most important point: a quality puppy should never be chosen from appearance alone.
Health testing, pedigree knowledge, the temperament of the parents, generations of genetic history, early development and ultimately the individual puppy all matter.

Health and genetic selection
Mala/Athena has FCI A hips, FCI 0 elbows and is DM Clear/Normal. Her GenSol DNA certificate confirms her DM Clear status. Lex has OFA Good hips, clear elbows and is a DM Carrier.
This is an intentionally managed DM Clear × Carrier breeding.
Puppies may be Clear or Carrier, but none are expected to inherit two copies of the tested DM-associated variant from this mating.
A Carrier is not the same as an affected dog; knowing the genetic status of both parents allows us to make informed breeding decisions rather than simply eliminating otherwise valuable genetics from a breeding population.
Hip and elbow evaluations are equally important. German Shepherd hip and elbow dysplasia are complex traits influenced by genetics as well as environmental factors. Clearances cannot guarantee every puppy's eventual orthopedic status, but they provide objective information about the breeding parents and are an essential component of responsible selection.
What we have already seen from this combination
