At Southernwind Kennels, our work is not just about breeding dogs—it’s about breeding purpose. For over 50 years, I have dedicated my life to understanding canine temperament at its deepest level.

Our Service and Emotional Support Dog Breeding Program was born out of a sincere desire to help people whose lives require more than just a companion. These individuals need a partner, a stabilizer, a light in the darkest moments. And that’s exactly what we aim to provide.

The Science Behind Our Service and Emotional Support Dog Breeding Program

Service and emotional support dogs are more than well-behaved pets. Science has proven that dogs possess the ability to regulate human emotions, detect subtle changes in heart rate, blood pressure, hormone levels, and even predict oncoming medical episodes.

Their cognitive awareness, sensory perception, and emotional intelligence make them unique therapeutic allies.

Through proper genetic selection, early stimulation, environmental shaping, and social learning, we can guide the development of a puppy into a dog who can remain calm under stress, alert but not reactive, and emotionally in tune with their human.

At Southernwind, we start this journey the moment the puppies are born. Using carefully planned and proven techniques rooted in neuroscience, behavior shaping, and early sensory exposure, our puppies are taught to adapt, focus, and trust. We mold their character with intention, not luck.

Dogs Have the Power to Fill Human Voids

In today’s world, loneliness, anxiety, and emotional instability affect people across all ages and backgrounds. While therapists and medications help, many are still searching for something deeper—a genuine connection that helps ground them. That’s where the dog steps in.

A properly bred and developed dog has the power to fill emotional gaps, offer unwavering support, and bring structure to chaos. Dogs don’t judge. They don’t ask questions. They simply stay, absorb, and give back in ways no words ever could.

I have personally witnessed how one of our dogs has helped a child with selective mutism speak again. I have seen a veteran sleep through the night for the first time in years thanks to the presence of his Southernwind dog. These are not just dogs. They are lifelines.

Not All Dogs Are Meant to Be Service or ESA Dogs

This is one of the most misunderstood concepts in the dog world. Not every dog, regardless of breed or training, is suited for this kind of responsibility.

Temperament is not something that can be created out of nothing—it must be identified, nurtured, and brought to its full potential with skill and knowledge.

At Southernwind, I rely on decades of experience, keen observation, and a deep-rooted instinct for reading dogs to match the right dog with the right person. I’ve worked with police departments, mounted units, sport dog trainers, and emotional support clients alike—and this combination of experience allows me to select puppies with extraordinary emotional balance and clarity of thought.

These dogs are not fearful. They are not overbearing. They are not hyperactive. They are balanced, observant, connected, and eager to work for a human.

Our Selection and Development Process

We take every step of our program seriously. Here is how we approach each service dog candidate:

  1. Pedigree and Genetic Selection: We start with bloodlines that have proven stable temperament, strong nerve, and workability.

  2. Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS): From day 3 to day 16, we apply controlled stress exercises to enhance brain development and adaptability.

  3. Sensory and Environmental Enrichment: Puppies are exposed to varied footings, sounds, people, animals, and stressors to strengthen resilience.

  4. Character Evaluation: At key development milestones, we test for confidence, startle recovery, problem-solving, and handler sensitivity.

  5. Client Assessment: We get to know the client’s lifestyle, needs, emotional triggers, and daily structure to identify the best puppy match.

  6. Guided Transition: We provide structured transition support and detailed educational materials for owners to continue development at home.

A Southernwind Promise: We Walk Beside You

We don’t just hand over a dog and wish you well. We become part of your journey. We guide you, educate you, and help you grow together with your dog.
