How to Reduce Hip Dysplasia Risk in a German Shepherd Puppy...even When the Parents Have Certified Hips

What owners can—and cannot—control through nutrition, body weight, exercise, flooring, stairs, muscle development and early screening.
Your German Shepherd puppy’s parents have certified hips.
Does that mean your puppy cannot develop hip dysplasia?
No.
That answer may not be comforting, but it is honest—and honesty is far more useful than a guarantee no responsible breeder or veterinarian can make.
Hip certification matters. Breeding dogs with properly evaluated hips is one of the most important tools we have for reducing inherited risk. But canine hip dysplasia is not controlled by one simple gene, and a certificate is not a genetic force field around every puppy in a litter.
Hip dysplasia is a multifactorial developmental disease.
Genetics carry the greatest single influence, but growth rate, excess body weight, nutrition, joint laxity, physical loading and injury can affect how the disease develops and how severely it may eventually express itself.
The American College of Veterinary Surgeons describes rapid weight gain and excessive nutritional intake as factors that can complicate the development of canine hip dysplasia.
I have spent more than five decades raising German Shepherds.
Long before every detail had a scientific name, experience kept teaching me the same lesson: a puppy needs enough movement to become strong, but not the kind of repetitive punishment that asks an immature body to perform like an adult.
A growing puppy needs nourishment, but not to be pushed into becoming big as fast as possible. And he needs traction beneath him—not a daily battle to keep his legs from sliding apart.

You cannot rewrite the genes your puppy inherited. But you can control many of the conditions under which those genes must develop.
That is where the owner’s responsibility begins.

What Is Canine Hip Dysplasia?
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. In a healthy hip, the head of the femur fits securely inside the acetabulum of the pelvis. In a dysplastic hip, abnormal looseness—called joint laxity—allows excessive movement between the ball and socket.
That repeated abnormal movement can damage cartilage, alter the shape of the joint and eventually produce osteoarthritis. Some dogs show pain while still young. Others appear normal for years. Some dogs have radiographic changes with few obvious symptoms, while others develop significant pain and loss of function.
This is why hip dysplasia is not simply a question of whether a puppy “walks normally” today.
If Both Parents Have Certified Hips, How Can a Puppy Still Develop Hip Dysplasia?
Because a hip certificate reports the observed hip phenotype of those individual parents at the time they were evaluated. It does not reveal every risk variant carried throughout the pedigree, and it cannot predict the precise combination inherited by each puppy.
Canine hip dysplasia is polygenic and multifactorial. Many genes contribute to susceptibility, and non-genetic influences affect development and expression. Two dogs with acceptable hip evaluations can therefore produce a puppy that later develops hip dysplasia.
That does not make parental certification meaningless. It means certification is risk reduction, not a guarantee.
Responsible selection should consider more than two certificates. Whenever reliable data are available, breeders should also study siblings, previous offspring and the wider family—not only the sire and dam standing in front of them.

Can Owners Prevent Hip Dysplasia Completely?
No. Anyone promising that one food, supplement, exercise rule or flooring product will prevent hip dysplasia in every puppy is selling certainty that science does not support.
A better and more defensible question is:
What can I do while my German Shepherd puppy is growing to reduce avoidable risk and protect developing joints?
The answer begins with body condition.
1. How to Reduce Hip Dysplasia Risk: Keep the Puppy Lean—Not “Big for His Age”
One of the most useful things an owner can do is also one of the least glamorous: do not overfeed the puppy.
In a controlled study of Labrador Retrievers from hip-dysplasia-prone lines, puppies fed 25 percent less than their paired littermates had a substantially lower frequency of hip dysplasia at two years of age: 7 of 24 limit-fed dogs compared with 16 of 24 dogs fed without restriction.
Long-term follow-up of the same colony also found delayed development and reduced severity of hip osteoarthritis in the leaner-fed dogs.
That does not mean owners should arbitrarily cut a puppy’s food by 25 percent. It means excess calorie intake and excess body weight are not harmless during skeletal development.
Your goal is not to create the heaviest puppy in the waiting room. Your goal is steady, controlled growth toward the puppy’s genetically determined adult size.
Use body condition, not emotion, to judge the puppy:
The ribs should be easy to feel beneath a light fat covering.
A waist should be visible when viewed from above.
An abdominal tuck should be visible from the side.
Weight and body-condition score should be recorded at routine veterinary visits.
The WSAVA Body Condition Score chart is a useful visual guide. For most healthy growing puppies, the veterinarian will generally aim for a lean, ideal condition rather than a rounded body, but your puppy’s individual target should be set with the veterinarian who is examining him.
A larger puppy is not necessarily a healthier puppy
German Shepherd owners are often praised when their puppy is unusually heavy. That praise can become dangerous when it encourages overfeeding.
Rapid growth does not create better genetics, a larger final frame or stronger joints. It asks immature cartilage, growth plates, ligaments and muscles to manage more load sooner.
2. Feed a Complete Diet Formulated for Large-Breed Growth
A German Shepherd puppy should not be fed as though he were a small-breed puppy or a miniature adult.
Choose a complete and balanced food appropriate for growth of large-size dogs. In the United States, read the nutritional adequacy statement on the package.
For a German Shepherd puppy, look for language confirming suitability for growth, including growth of large-size dogs—70 pounds or more as an adult. AAFCO explains how nutritional-adequacy statements identify the species and life stage for which a food is formulated or feeding-tested.
The important questions are not whether the bag looks natural, expensive or impressive. Ask:
Is it nutritionally complete and balanced for the correct life stage and adult size?
Does the manufacturer employ qualified nutrition experts and maintain strong quality-control practices?
Are feeding amounts measured and adjusted to the puppy’s body condition and growth—not followed blindly from the bag?
Is the total diet still balanced after treats, toppers and supplements are counted?
The WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines provide tools owners and veterinary teams can use to evaluate nutrition and body condition.
Do not add calcium “for stronger bones”
More calcium does not mean stronger hips.
Growing large-breed puppies are particularly vulnerable to nutritional mineral imbalance.
Scientific reviews have linked excess calcium—especially when combined with an unsuitable calcium-to-phosphorus balance—to abnormal skeletal development.
If a puppy is eating a correctly formulated complete large-breed growth diet, adding calcium, bone meal, mineral powders or unbalanced homemade additions can destroy the balance that food was designed to provide.
Unless a veterinarian or board-certified veterinary nutritionist identifies a specific need, do not supplement calcium.
Protein is not the simple villain social media makes it
The old claim that protein by itself causes hip dysplasia or makes a puppy grow “too fast” is an oversimplification.
Total calories, body condition and mineral balance are the more important practical targets. Do not choose an unbalanced or nutritionally inappropriate diet merely because someone told you to fear protein.
Owners feeding a homemade, raw or heavily modified diet should have it formulated for large-breed growth by a qualified veterinary nutrition specialist. Good intentions do not balance calcium, phosphorus, energy and micronutrients.
3. Build Muscle Through Age-Appropriate Movement—Do Not Raise the Puppy in a Box
Protecting a puppy’s joints does not mean preventing him from moving.
Muscles help stabilize the body, movement develops coordination, and varied exploration teaches a puppy how to use himself.
A sedentary puppy does not become physically resilient simply because nothing difficult ever happened to him.
In a prospective study of four large and giant breeds, off-leash outdoor activity on soft, moderately uneven ground during the first three months was associated with a lower risk of radiographically detected hip dysplasia.
That finding should be interpreted carefully: it was an observational study, it did not include German Shepherd Dogs, and it could not prescribe a universal number of minutes. But it directly challenges the idea that all free movement is harmful.
Useful puppy movement can include:
Self-paced exploration on grass, soil and other secure, traction-rich surfaces
Short, age-appropriate walks that do not force the puppy to keep an adult pace
Calm play with compatible dogs of appropriate size and social behavior
Gentle changes in terrain that develop balance and body awareness
Swimming, when introduced safely and without exhausting the puppy
Later, individualized conditioning exercises taught by a veterinarian or qualified canine rehabilitation professional
The principle is simple: frequent, moderate, self-regulated movement is not the same as repetitive forced exercise.

4. Avoid Repetitive Impact and Forced Endurance During Growth
A puppy may have the desire to keep going long after his immature body has had enough.
During growth, avoid turning exercise into repeated physical punishment.
Examples include:
Long-distance running beside a bicycle
Repetitive running on hard pavement
Repeated high jumping for balls, discs or obstacles
Frequent hard landings from vehicles, beds, retaining walls or training equipment
Endless sharp turns and stops during high-arousal ball chasing
Exercise in which the puppy cannot slow down, stop or choose his own pace
Rough play with much larger dogs that repeatedly knock him down or roll him
There is no scientifically validated universal rule stating that every puppy should receive exactly “five minutes of exercise per month of age.” It is a catchy formula, not an individualized orthopedic assessment.
The right amount depends on the puppy’s age, body condition, structure, health, terrain, intensity, recovery and the type of activity. Watch the puppy during the exercise and again later that day. Fatigue, stiffness, shortened stride, reluctance, lagging behind or soreness afterward means the demand was too high and warrants veterinary guidance if it persists.
5. Take Stairs Seriously—but Do Not Turn Them Into a Myth
The prospective study discussed above found that puppies using stairs from birth through three months of age had an increased risk of hip dysplasia in the breeds studied. That is meaningful evidence, but it does not prove that one staircase causes hip dysplasia in every German Shepherd or that all stairs must be forbidden until adulthood.
A practical approach is to:
Minimize repeated, unsupervised stair climbing in very young puppies
Carry a puppy when it is safe and physically possible, especially on long or steep staircases
Use gates to prevent racing up and down stairs
Add secure traction to slick steps
Teach slow, controlled stair use when stairs cannot be avoided
Prevent jumping from the upper steps
The danger is not merely the existence of a staircase. Speed, repetition, slipping, poor coordination and hard impact all change the load placed on a developing body.
6. Give the Puppy Traction on Slippery Floors

Tile, polished concrete, laminate and hardwood can force a puppy to shorten his stride, spread his limbs or scramble for balance.
A traction-poor floor also increases the chance of falls and sudden twisting injuries.
There is a sensible biomechanical reason to improve footing, and veterinary sources identify slippery developmental surfaces as a concern. However, the research is not strong enough to claim that putting down rugs will single-handedly prevent hip dysplasia. Flooring is one part of the total environment—not a cure and not a substitute for genetics, body-weight control or appropriate exercise.
Practical changes include:
Non-slip runners through the puppy’s main travel paths
Rubber-backed mats near doors, food and water stations
Secure traction where the puppy turns, plays, rises or exits a crate
Keeping nails appropriately short and paw hair trimmed when needed
Cleaning spills immediately
Preventing high-speed indoor chasing on slick surfaces
The puppy should not have to fight the floor every time he stands up.
7. Prevent Obesity Without Preventing Strength
Weight control and muscle development belong together.
A thin puppy with poor muscle and no conditioning is not the goal. Neither is a heavily muscled adolescent built through repetitive impact before the skeleton is ready.
The goal is a lean puppy developing coordination, strength and endurance gradually.
This is one reason I believe so strongly in raising puppies through thoughtful exposure rather than confinement. Safe surfaces, room to explore, small physical questions and time to recover help build the entire dog.

If a puppy already has suspected joint laxity, pain or an abnormal gait, conditioning must be designed with veterinary supervision. Exercise appropriate for a healthy puppy may be inappropriate for a painful one.
8. Watch for Early Signs—and Do Not Wait for Severe Limping
Possible signs of hip dysplasia in a growing puppy can include:
Bunny-hopping with the rear legs when running
Difficulty rising after rest
Reluctance to climb stairs, jump or get into a vehicle
Rear-limb lameness or stiffness
Swaying gait or reduced stride behind
Shifting weight toward the front legs
Loss or poor development of rear-limb muscle
Pain or resistance when the hips are handled
Reduced willingness to play or exercise
None of these signs proves hip dysplasia. Knee problems, soft-tissue injuries, panosteitis, neurologic disease and other conditions can produce similar changes. A veterinarian must examine the puppy and decide what diagnostic testing is appropriate.
Also remember: the absence of visible symptoms does not prove the hips are normal. Some dogs with meaningful laxity show little outward discomfort early in life.
9. Understand PennHIP, Preliminary OFA Evaluation and Final OFA Certification
Screening and diagnosis are not the same as watching a puppy walk across the yard.
PennHIP
PennHIP uses three radiographic views to evaluate hip congruity, existing osteoarthritis and passive joint laxity. It produces a Distraction Index, which quantifies laxity.
According to PennHIP, the procedure can be performed reliably from 16 weeks of age, and laxity measured at that age correlates strongly with later laxity.
This can be valuable when there is a concern, when early risk information will change management, or when a veterinarian is evaluating possible early intervention. It requires sedation or anesthesia and must be performed by a trained veterinarian.
OFA preliminary hip evaluation
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals accepts preliminary hip evaluations before 24 months. Preliminary results can provide useful information, but they are not the same as final adult certification.
Final OFA hip certification
Final OFA hip certification is performed at 24 months of age or older. It remains important for breeding selection, but an owner should never ignore early clinical signs simply because the puppy is “too young for final OFA films.”
Ask your veterinarian whether early orthopedic examination, PennHIP or another diagnostic approach is appropriate for your individual puppy. Timing matters because some interventions for severe juvenile laxity are age-sensitive.
What About Joint Supplements?
No supplement can tighten a genetically lax hip, correct an improperly developed socket or cancel out excess body weight.
Some products may have a role in managing inflammation or osteoarthritis under veterinary guidance, but that is different from proving they prevent hip dysplasia in a healthy puppy. Even the American College of Veterinary Surgeons notes that evidence does not show commonly recommended cartilage-protective supplements repair cartilage or protect it from wear.
Do not let a jar of supplements distract you from the factors with greater practical value:
Responsible parental and family selection
Lean body condition
Complete large-breed growth nutrition
No unnecessary calcium supplementation
Appropriate movement and muscle development
Reduced repetitive impact, falls and slipping
Early veterinary evaluation when something looks wrong
A Practical Hip-Protection Checklist for German Shepherd Puppy Owners
Every day
Measure food instead of estimating it.
Keep treats and toppers within the total daily calorie plan.
Give the puppy safe, self-paced movement on good footing.
Block uncontrolled stair racing and dangerous jumps.
Use runners or mats on the slickest travel paths.
Watch how the puppy rises, trots, plays and recovers.
Every week
Look at the puppy from above and from the side.
Feel the ribs instead of judging body condition through the coat.
Record weight, but do not chase a number from another puppy or an online chart.
Adjust calories gradually if body condition is moving away from the veterinarian’s target.
At veterinary visits
Ask for a recorded body-condition score.
Discuss the exact food, measured daily amount, treats and supplements.
Mention any stiffness, limping, bunny-hopping or change in activity.
Ask whether early hip-laxity screening is appropriate.
Obtain a referral to a board-certified veterinary surgeon or rehabilitation professional when indicated.
The Truth Owners Need to Hear
Hip-certified parents are the beginning of responsible risk reduction. They are not the end of it.
The breeder chooses the parents and shapes the earliest environment. Then the puppy leaves, and the owner becomes part of the developmental equation.
You cannot promise that your puppy will never develop hip dysplasia. Neither can I.
What we can do is refuse the mistakes that are within our control: pushing growth, allowing obesity, unbalancing the diet, supplementing blindly, demanding adult athletic work from an immature body, or ignoring early warning signs.
Do not raise your German Shepherd puppy to be the biggest puppy at four months old.
Raise him to arrive at adulthood lean, coordinated, well-muscled, confident and sound enough to use the body his genetics gave him.
That is not a guarantee.
It is responsible stewardship—and it gives the puppy his best honest chance.
Frequently Asked Questions About German Shepherd Puppy Hip Dysplasia
Can a German Shepherd puppy develop hip dysplasia if both parents have OFA-certified hips?
Yes. Certified parents reduce inherited risk, but canine hip dysplasia is polygenic and multifactorial. A puppy can inherit an unfavorable combination of risk factors even when both parents have acceptable hip evaluations.
Can overfeeding cause hip dysplasia?
Overfeeding does not create the puppy’s genetic susceptibility, but excessive calorie intake, rapid weight gain and excess body weight can increase stress on developing joints and influence the expression or severity of developmental orthopedic disease.
Should a German Shepherd puppy take calcium supplements?
Not when the puppy is eating a complete and balanced diet formulated for large-breed growth, unless a veterinarian or veterinary nutrition specialist has identified a specific need. Excess calcium or an improper calcium-to-phosphorus balance can disrupt skeletal development.
Are stairs bad for German Shepherd puppies?
Repeated stair use in the first three months was associated with increased hip-dysplasia risk in one prospective study of four large and giant breeds. Is exercise good or bad for a puppy’s hips?
Appropriate movement is necessary for muscle, coordination and normal development. The concern is repetitive impact, forced endurance, hard landings, slipping and work that exceeds the puppy’s developmental capacity. Self-paced movement on secure, forgiving surfaces is different from forced running or repetitive jumping.
At what age can a puppy have PennHIP screening?
PennHIP states that its hip-laxity evaluation can be performed reliably from 16 weeks of age. The procedure requires sedation or anesthesia and must be completed by a trained veterinarian.
When can a German Shepherd receive final OFA hip certification?
OFA final hip certification is available at 24 months of age or older. OFA also accepts preliminary evaluations in younger dogs, but owners should seek veterinary evaluation immediately when symptoms or developmental concerns appear.
Can supplements prevent hip dysplasia?
No supplement has been shown to override genetic susceptibility or prevent hip dysplasia reliably. Supplements should never replace lean body condition, balanced growth nutrition, appropriate exercise, safe footing or veterinary screening.
